Description This painting supposedly of a soldier from Mongolia refers to the Mongol invasion of Java, a military effort by the Yuan dynasty of China under Kublai Khan to invade Java in 1293. The attack was meant as a punitive expedition against King Kertanegara of Singhasari, who had refused to pay tribute to the Yuan and maimed one of its ministers. However, it ended with failure for the Yuan dynasty and victory for Singhasari.
