Description | The painting portrays Sunan Kalijaga spreading Islam through the use of traditional shadow poppets (wayang kulit) and music.
Sunan Kalijaga was born in 1460 Raden Mas Said, son of Adipati (duke) of Tuban Tumenggung Harya Wilatikta and buried in 1513 at Kadilangu, Demak. He was one of the Wali Songo, the nine revered saints of Islam in Java, because of their historic role in the spread of Islam in Indonesia. He believed in making people understand Islam gradually through artworks, particularly in carvings, shadow puppets, gamelan musical performance, and singing. He founded two mosques Masjid Agung Cirebon (in Cirebon) and Masjid Agung Demak (in Demak), both also often portrayed in glass paintings. |
