Rosalia (Lia) Sciortino Sumaryono, dr, Angsa Merah

Dr. Lia Sciortino Sumaryono, a cultural anthropologist and development sociologist by training, earned her doctorate at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam with honors.

Currently, Dr. Sciortino is Associate Professor at the Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), Mahidol University, Visiting Professor at the Master of International Development Studies (MAIDS), Chulalongkorn University, and advisor to the Indonesia-Australia bilateral program Indonesian Women for Poverty Reduction (MAMPU).

Formerly she was the IDRC Regional Director for Southeast and East Asia (2010-2014), Senior Adviser for Health to the Australian Agency for International Development in Indonesia (2009-2010), and Regional Director for Southeast Asia of the Rockefeller Foundation (2000-2007) establishing during her tenure the Foundation’s Asia Office in Bangkok. Prior to that, she was program officer Human Development and Reproductive Health at the Indonesia and Philippines offices of the Ford Foundation from 1993 to 2000.

Dr. Sciortino has acted as a consultant for international and regional organizations, as an adviser for non-profit organizations, and as a visiting professor at various Southeast Asian and Dutch universities. She has published widely on development issues in Southeast Asia, in particular social health, migration, gender and regional integration in the Greater Mekong Sub-region and Southeast Asia.

Her books “Care-Takers of Cure; An Anthropological Study of Health Centre Nurses in Indonesia” and “Kesehatan Madani” even if decades-old remain recommended reading for those interested in health in Indonesia. A native of Palermo, Italy, she fluently speaks Italian, Dutch, English and Bahasa Indonesia.
