| Description | A pair of bride and groom at the marriage ceremony with attendants.
Marriage couples are popular subjects in glass paintings from Central Java. They refer to “pengantin Loro Blonyo” sculptures made of wood or terracotta as a symbol of prosperity and harmony. They represent Dewi Sri, the goddess of feritility, protectress of rice, and her consort Raden Sadhono. Dewi Sri is a Javanese adaptation of The Indian goddess of Sri Devi, the female form of Vishnu and goddess of prosperity, fertility and beauty. The pair of sculptures are placed in the house to emphasize harmony and foster prosperity and fertility. The glass paintins with the pair of bride and groom convey the same meaning. |
