Description |
Prince Diponegoro a leading member of the Javanese aristocracy son of the Jogjakartan Sultan Hamengkubuwono who was born in 1785. The rebel forces laid siege to Yogyakarta, and when it was ended by colonial and European troops in 1825 continued fighting a guerrilla war for five years, which became known as Java War. Eventually Prince Diponegoro was invited to a peace conference, but was betrayed, captured and exiled in Sulawesi where he died in 1855. (Adapted from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_War) The painter Sastrogambar is the older brother of Maryono –another well-known painter of glass paintings. |
