Description | The painting portraying Petruk, one of the Punakawan –clowns in Javanese shadow play—enjoying life, here expressing that “power corrupts”. The Javanese writing “Melik nggendong lali” says that if someone becomes rich and/or powerful forgets proper behaviour.
The calendar in the back with Indonesia’s Independence Day of 17 Augustus has political connotations. Other paintings from the same author have the identical theme and main scene, but different backgrounds as per the clipping below showing also the artist. The painter Maryono is the younger brother of Sastrogambar –another well-known painter of glass paintings. |
