| Description |
In Java and in many places where Javanese communities live, people commemorate Satu Suro (Javanese: Siji Suro), the first day of the Javanese calendar year in the month of Suro (also transcribed “Sura“), corresponding with the first Islamic month of Muharram. Satu Suro is considered sacred and has numerous cultural and mystical connotations. The Kirab 1 Suro (The 1st of Suro Procession) starts from the sunset of the last day in the previous year until the dawn of the following day (1st of Suro).The activity in the celebration is the bathing of heirloom objects/weapons and then marching/procession (kirab) of these mystical objects. This painting is part of a series of four. The idea for this series of painting was given by the late O’ong Maryono based on a calendar picture of the Lontar Foundation taken from a palm leaf manuscript |
